DENTAL BRIDGES

Dental bridges are used to replace a missing tooth with an artificial tooth.

Natural teeth ‘anchor’ a dental bridge on either side of the gap. It is fitted into place and attached to teeth on either side, making it a fixed solution. Besides filling the gaps, this treatment also benefits the teeth either side during the treatment as it prevents them from moving to close the gap.

Although dental implants have revolutionised teeth replacement options, bridges still are a popular alternative to dental implants, proving to be a long term solution. Unlike dental implants, bridges are a lot more straightforward as they don’t require oral surgery. It is also much faster to get a dental bridge rather than a dental implant as most bridges can be fitted within a few days. Price wise, bridges are often more affordable than an implant.

In some instances, a bridge may not be the best suited treatment option, especially if the teeth either side of the gap are healthy. That’s because to fit a bridge; we have to remove the tooth surface of adjacent teeth. We are always reluctant to remove enamel from healthy tooth, only to provide a bridge. In these instances, we will always present you with a different option such as a dental implant.

FAQ

A dental bridge is a tooth replacement procedure. A dental bridge is fitted in the gap and then supported by teeth on either side. Some people prefer dental bridges over implants because it doesn’t not require oral surgery and is a more affordable option.

Dental bridges are an excellent alternative to implants or dentures in select cases. We recommend bridges in cases where the adjacent teeth are broken or decayed. In these examples, a bridge is a good option.

If you have been refused a dental implant because of the gum & teeth health, the bridge can be an alternative.

Porcelain bridge or a fusion of porcelain and metal are the two most popular types.

The treatment is relatively straightforward and should take 2 appointments:

Appointment 1 – We conduct a full examination, x-rays and then proceed to prepare the adjacent teeth. A local anaesthetic is administered as it involves drilling the teeth. During the same appointment, an impression is taken for the bridge. While you wait for your bridge, a temporary bridge can be fitted on the same day. This is for aesthetic and cosmetic purpose.

Appointment 2 – During your next appointment, a bespoke bridge is fitted. There is usually a 5-7 days gap between the appointments.

Provided you take good care of them by maintaining good oral health and regular visits to the dentist, you can expect the bridge to last between 7-10 years. Another defining factor in how long it lasts is the material used. Implant supported bridges are the most permanent and long lasting type of bridge. At Coulsdon Dental Clinic, the treatment costs from £800. When comparing prices of a dental bridge, be aware of ‘from prices.’ Don’t hesitate to enquire how many teeth are in a unit. For instance, if you are looking to replace a single gap with two adjacent teeth anchoring the bridge, it is considered a three-unit bridge.
